We see our Pupils
as individuals who will, in the near future, be
called to the Singapore Bar and become our Legal
Associates and in time, become a Partner of this
Firm. We therefore invest a great deal of time
and energy into training our Pupils.
Because we are fiercely proud of our reputation
and the quality of our work, we work hard to maintain
this and we expect our Pupils to share that same
resilience to get the job done right. While grades
are important in the sense that they will show
how much you learned and how well you have done
in law school, we take the view that the true
measure of the ability of a person is not obtained
merely through his or her academic results. Equally
important are your work ethics, competency, core
legal work, problem-solving skills and ability
to work as a team.
Pupillage Allowance and Benefits
The Firm will pay a competitive monthly allowance
during your pupillage and during your time at
the Practical Law Course (PLC). In addition, you
will have access to your own computer terminal
and the Firm’s resources. Upon retention,
the Firm will reimburse your PLC and filing fees,
on the understanding that you will complete a
certain length of service with the Firm.
Pupillage Training
HEP is a full-service Firm. You will therefore
be exposed to all our practice areas. This will
be an opportunity for you, at the start of your
legal career, to gain valuable exposure, as well
as to get a better idea of the type of work you
feel most suits you.
We believe that the best way to learn is to get
hands-on experience. You will have to think quickly
on your feet, be self-motivated, and responsible
for the files you work on. That way, you learn
more, faster. After all, we think of you as a
potential colleague, and we have a vested interest
in ensuring that you become a very good lawyer.
That said, our doors are always open and our partners
and associates are always there to help and guide
you along.
Pupil Master
When you send us your pupillage application,
please let us know the areas of practice you are
interested in. We will make every effort to assign
you a pupil master of your preferred field. Our
Pupils often sit down with their pupil master
and other senior lawyers to discuss their progress
and other matters.
There is a rotation policy in HEP, but it is
not a rigid system, primarily designed to allow
you to do the area of law that you feel both interests
and benefits you.
Retention Rate
As we take in pupils with a view to retention
and their future development as part of our Firm,
our retention rate is very high.
Starting Salary for HEP’s Lawyers
and Perks
HEP’s lawyers receive a remuneration package
which is competitively pegged to the high end
of market rate, as well as medical and other benefits,
such as overseas trips, reimbursement of mobile
phone bills, transport and meal allowance for
overtime work.
Additionally, there is a monthly allowance for
our lawyers for their get-together, meal and other
recreational activities, so as to foster camaraderie
amongst the lawyers. "The Partners expect
this - We expect them to blow a decent kitty at
Boat Quay (a local after work entertainment area
in Singapore's financial district) every month.
The partners are annoyed if they don't spend the
money." - Latiff Ibrahim in Asian Legal Business
(2007).
As we believe in a balance between work and leisure,
and long term legal career for all, our practice
is geared towards achieving that.
