We see our Trainees as individuals who will, in the near future, be called to the Singapore Bar and become our Legal Associates and in time, become a Partner of this Firm. We therefore invest a great deal of time and energy into training our Trainees.
Because we are fiercely proud of our reputation and the quality of our work, we work hard to maintain this and we expect our Trainees to share that same resilience to get the job done right. While grades are important in the sense that they will show how much you learned and how well you have done in law school, we take the view that the true measure of the ability of a person is not obtained merely through his or her academic results. Equally important are your work ethics, competency, core legal work, problem-solving skills and ability to work as a team.
Training Allowance and Benefits
The firm will pay a competitive monthly honorarium during your Practice Training Contract. In addition, you will have access to your own computer terminal and the Firm’s resources. You will also receive an additional lump sum honorarium after you have successfully completed the Singapore Bar Examination Part B and upon commencement of your Practice Training with the Firm.
Pupillage Training
HEP is a full-service Firm. You will therefore
be exposed to all our practice areas. This will
be an opportunity for you, at the start of your
legal career, to gain valuable exposure, as well
as to get a better idea of the type of work you
feel most suits you.
We believe that the best way to learn is to get
hands-on experience. You will have to think quickly
on your feet, be self-motivated, and responsible
for the files you work on. That way, you learn
more, faster. After all, we think of you as a
potential colleague, and we have a vested interest
in ensuring that you become a very good lawyer.
That said, our doors are always open and our partners
and associates are always there to help and guide
you along.
Pupil Master
When you send us your pupillage/training contract application, please let us know the areas of practice you are interested in. We will make every effort to assign you a pupil master of your preferred field. Our Trainees often sit down with their pupil master and other senior lawyers to discuss their progress and other matters.
There is a rotation policy in HEP, but it is not a rigid system, primarily designed to allow you to do the area of law that you feel both interests and benefits you.
Retention Rate
As we take in Trainees with a view to retention and their future development as part of our Firm, our retention rate is very high.
Starting Salary for HEP’s Lawyers
and Perks
HEP’s lawyers receive a remuneration package which is competitively pegged to the high end of market rate, as well as medical and other benefits, such as overseas trips, reimbursement of mobile phone bills, transport and meal allowance for overtime work.
As we believe in a balance between work and leisure, and long term legal career for all, our practice is geared towards achieving that.
